Maun is the third largest town in Botswana. It is a mix of modern buildings and local huts. Maun is the tourism centre of Botswana and the capital of Ngamiland. It is also the HQ of frequent safari and air-charter trips. Maun has developed quickly from a country town and has flourished along the Thamalakane River. It has a lot of good shopping centers, hotels and lodges. The rural atmosphere hasn’t disappeared yet and local tribes still live in the neighborhood. The best time to visit is from May to October when there is no rain. Remember that nights can be cold so you should take a jacket. Maun is the gateway to the Okavango Delta and the starting point of most Botswana safaris.
Explore this quirky town, before having to drop your car off at the airport. There is Letshwee centre where guide training takes place, where Zebras and various game species roam. You can do a scenic Delta game flight. There are also some fabulous hotels and lodges on the banks of the Thamalakane River which runs from the Delta through Maun. Okavango River Lodge is one such camp where you sip and ice cold beer whilst looking out over the river. Take a drive to the Buffalo Fence (about 1.5 hours) the Buffalo fence is what separates the Okavango Delta Wildlife from Mauns livestock.
